Grocery store gives thousands to help community

LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB)- Some nonprofit agencies in Southwest Georgia are receiving a little extra help thanks to a grocery store and its employees.

Publix Super Markets Inc. presented the United Way of Southwest Georgia with a check for $28,400 towards their annual campaign.  In addition to the corporate contribution, employees have pledged an additional $36,755. 

The funds will be given to partner agencies in Southwest Georgia that provide program services in education, health, basic needs, and income.

Lee Co. killer's stay lifted

ATLANTA (AP) - A federal appeals court that halted the execution of a Georgia man has lifted its stay, clearing the way for a new execution date.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stepped in at the last minute to temporarily block Warren Lee Hill's execution in February. The court said it wanted to consider Hill's arguments that a federal court should reconsider his case.

AFD champion enters Under Armour contest

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- One of the Albany Fire Department's fastest and most physically fit firefighters is entering a national video contest and wants your help to win.

27 year old Aaron Tomlinson is well known for winning the Georgia State Firefighters Association quick dress competition in 2011, and finished runner up in 2012.

He can fully dress in his fire equipment in 38 seconds.

Now he has produced a video for Under Armour, and is one of the 500 finalists in the national contest about fitness. 

YMCA offers diabetes, lifestyle camp for kids

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The Albany YMCA in conjunction with Phoebe Diabetes Care Center presents Camp KWD and Camp FIT. Camp KWD is for kids, ages 8-13, with type 1 or type 2 diabetes or those who have a family history of diabetes.

Camp is also open to kids who have pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome or have been told that they are at risk for developing diabetes. A Phoebe dietitian will offer expert advice on an age-appropriate level, and throughout camp, Phoebe nurses will monitor blood glucose before and after various activities.

ALBANY – The Darton State College Wetherbee Library recently held its 13th Annual Poetry Contest for junior and senior high school students in Southwest Georgia.

Rhett Ragan, of Randolph Southern School, won first place in the senior division, and Khashaad Johnson, of Randolph Southern School, won first place in the Junior Division.

LEESBURG, GA (WALB)- We're now learning more about the brothers tied to the Boston Marathon Bombings. Although we don't know the clear motive behind the attacks, we do know the suspects had ties to a Russian region in Chechnya, which also has ties to Al Qaeda.

Terrorism is much more wide spread than most folks realize, and not confined to Iraq or Afghanistan....

"Terrorism is everywhere, it's everywhere, even Ireland has a history of political violence and terrorism," said Brandon Brock, who teaches World History Teacher at Lee County High .

Relay for Life goes on-- rain or shine

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The annual Relay for Life fundraiser is underway and will continue into the overnight hours at the Darton Track. The area will be filled with cancer survivors and people from all walks of life hoping to find a cure to the killer disease.

The goal is to raise $145,000 for cancer research. $86,000 has already been raised, and organizers say they're determined to reach that goal, even if they have to continue in heavy rain.
