In a world where technology trumps all, schools often find themselves scrambling to keep up. Thanks to a local farmer and America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM, Terrell Academy can add another SMART Board to its classrooms.

Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. Rodney Harrell was the winning farmer in Lee County, and he chose to direct the donation to Terrell Academy.

Great American Cleanup day

LEE COUNTY, GA – News release from Lee County Board of Commissioners

The Lee County Board of Commissioners will be hosting the county’s annual Great American Clean on Saturday, April 21st. The county wide event will include the cities of Smithville and Leesburg.

Volunteers will be removing accumulated trash and litter from county and city right of ways, storm drain systems, and parks.

Environmental toxins linked to hardening of arteries

(HealthDay News) -- Environmental pollutants such as dioxins, PCBs and pesticides are associated with hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), according to a new study.

Atherosclerosis is the major underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, which are the most common cause of death in industrialized countries, said the researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., applauded Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack’s decision to declare 150 drought-stricken counties in Georgia disaster areas, as requested by Gov. Nathan Deal. Since April 2011, many parts of Georgia have experienced extreme weather conditions and suffered numerous crop losses. With the USDA Secretarial Disaster Designation, Georgia farmers will be able to apply for emergency loans and other benefits to ease losses.

LEESBURG, GA - The Lee County Board of Commissioners, Smithville City Council, and the Leesburg City Council will host the community’s annual Great American Clean Up Saturday, April 30, at 8:30 a.m.

The event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 am. Volunteer teams will clean areas of the county and cities where trash and litter have accumulated.
