ATC hosts career fair

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Some South Georgia students were out in the job field today. Albany Technical College hosted their spring career fair. The career fair is what some students may need to find that new job.

Albany Technical College student, Denika McClay has been out of work and job hunting for the past six months. Soon, she will graduate from the school's Dental Assistant program.

She came to Albany Technical College 15th annual career fair to get a jump start on her career after graduation. Being out of work has been difficult, but she knows her hard work will pay off.

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The search continues for victims of the explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant. The blast claimed at least five lives, and left homes, buildings, and a community, destroyed.

Ammonia nitrate and anhydrous ammonia, like that suspected to have exploded in the Texas plant, are commonly used in chemicals dealing with everything from refrigerant to fertilizer at most South Georgia industries.

So emergency management officials say it is possible it could happen here.

Marine Base holds Unity, Multicultural Day

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The Marine Corps Logistics Base celebrated different cultures that make up our nation's armed forces Thursday.

The ninth annual multi-cultural heritage day included various cultural performances and displays. It gives people of all different backgrounds to celebrate what it means to be an American.

Gun advocate reacts to squashed expanded background check bill

LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB)- One South Georgia gun rights advocate agrees with the Senate, after a proposed bill to expand background checks for gun purchases was voted down.

Steven Drew of Georgia Loan and Gun in Lee County says expanded background checks would only affect those who are legally trying to buy a gun and would not deter criminals.

Group report: Flint River #2 most endangered

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- An environmental group declares the Flint River the second most endangered river in the United States.

American Rivers says mismanagement by state officials is the reason the Flint River is endangered.

The group says over-permitting by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has caused flow rates in the lower Flint to decrease by 40-percent since 1975 and by more than 70-percent in its tributaries.

After Boston, are we prepared?

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- South Georgia law enforcement and emergency management officials today discussed their preparedness in case a bombing happened in our community.   

They say since 911 some complacency may have crept back into America, and the deadly Boston event should remind everyone to be vigilant.   

The big question on everyone's mind as representatives from 23 South Georgia counties Emergency Management met today, are we ready if it happens in our town? 

Officers indicted for assaulting inmates

WASHINGTON – Deputy Warden James Hinton and seven former members of the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) at Macon State Prison in Oglethorpe, Ga., were charged with federal civil rights, conspiracy or obstruction offenses arising out of incidents in which inmates were allegedly assaulted by officers in order to punish the inmates for prior misconduct.
