Lee County commissioners continue merger talk

LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB)- Lee County Commissioners continue their discussion about possibly merging EMS and the fire department to save money and improve the county's fire protection rating.

Tuesday evening, commissioners heard from a consultant on the benefits of cross-training EMT's and firefighters.

Next, the commission will decide whether to hire that consultant to assess the fire department and further explore how merging the two departments could be beneficial.

Chairman Rick Muggridge believes a merger would be good for taxpayers.

Alday Murders: 40 years later

DONALSONVILLE, GA (WALB)- Tuesday marks the anniversary of one of the worst crimes in the history of Georgia; the Alday family murders in Seminole County.

Six members of the Alday family were brutally murdered by a trio of prison escapees, on May 14, 1973.

Nine days after three inmates escaped from a Maryland prison they would end up at the home of Jerry Alday looking for money and guns. The men fatally shot Jerry, his father Ned, brothers Chester and Jimmy, and Uncle Aubrey. His wife, Mary was brutally raped and killed. Her body found two days later in a wooded area.

Lee County supports Special Olympics

LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB)- Lee County officials are inviting everyone out to Leesburg Saturday for a fun day with the family, all for a special cause.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is holding their annual Special Olympics Fundraiser Festival to help Special Olympians participate in Georgia's statewide games at Butterfly Kisses Special Needs Play Park from 10:30 am to 3 pm on May 18th.

Georgia Special Olympics serves over 24 thousand athletes with intellectual disabilities to providing them with year-round sports training and athletic competition.

Science Olympiad draws 400

ALBANY, GA (WALB)-  The future scientists of South Georgia gathered at Chehaw Friday to show off their skills. The park hosted the 14th annual Science Olympiad.

Third through fifth grade students competed in different science events. Teachers say competitions like this are important to show students that science isn't just something you read about in a book.

"Understanding that science is fun that science isn't just all sitting down and reading a book sitting down doing a lab science is fun," said Calvin Poole, a 5th Grade Science Teacher.

Students compete in cooking competition

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Culinary Arts students from Lee County High School are putting their best recipes forward at Albany Tech's Culinary Arts lab.

The culinary class goes further than just the competition according to Maria Jaime, a senior at Lee County High School, "Well actually most of our work is book work, it's not all in the kitchen, so we learn how to convert recipes, and the temperature different things should be cooked too, and we have a lot of paperwork that goes with it, it's not all fun."

Lee teacher arrested on drug charges

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- An educator employed by the Lee County School System was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a drug charge by agents of the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit.

Authorities say they pulled over Kimela Smith Phillips near an area known for drug activity for a traffic violation, and found Xanax pills in her possession.

She was charged with violation of a Schedule IV substance, and having prescription medicine not in their proper container.
