DONALSONVILLE, GA (WALB)- Tuesday marks the anniversary of one of the worst crimes in the history of Georgia; the Alday family murders in Seminole County.

Six members of the Alday family were brutally murdered by a trio of prison escapees, on May 14, 1973.

Nine days after three inmates escaped from a Maryland prison they would end up at the home of Jerry Alday looking for money and guns. The men fatally shot Jerry, his father Ned, brothers Chester and Jimmy, and Uncle Aubrey. His wife, Mary was brutally raped and killed. Her body found two days later in a wooded area.

ALBANY, GA (WALB)-  The future scientists of South Georgia gathered at Chehaw Friday to show off their skills. The park hosted the 14th annual Science Olympiad.

Third through fifth grade students competed in different science events. Teachers say competitions like this are important to show students that science isn't just something you read about in a book.

"Understanding that science is fun that science isn't just all sitting down and reading a book sitting down doing a lab science is fun," said Calvin Poole, a 5th Grade Science Teacher.

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- An educator employed by the Lee County School System was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a drug charge by agents of the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit.

Authorities say they pulled over Kimela Smith Phillips near an area known for drug activity for a traffic violation, and found Xanax pills in her possession.

She was charged with violation of a Schedule IV substance, and having prescription medicine not in their proper container.
